A high school field hosts more games, practices, and gym classes than most people realize, and the grass gets no days off. Wisconsin weather adds a frozen spring and a wet fall on top. That’s the job we take on.

David J. Frank Landscape Contracting has maintained institutional and commercial turf across Wisconsin for more than 65 years. And fields get their own program, apart from general grounds work, because the standard is different.

Where a field wears out first

Soccer fields go in the goalmouths and the center circle. Football fields go along the hash marks and in front of the sideline. Baseball loses the base paths and the dirt lip where the infield meets the grass.

Those spots wear out every season. Most of the work is protecting them and getting them back quickly.

The first walk

The job starts with a walk alongside the athletic director or the parks supervisor. We push a probe into the ground, pull a soil sample, and look hard at the low spots. Then the plan gets built around the calendar for that field.

A fall soccer pitch and a spring baseball diamond need different timing. A field that hosts three sports ends up as a compromise, and we say so up front.

Mowing, aeration, and overseeding

Most Wisconsin fields run on Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. Cutting height depends on the sport, and the blades get sharpened often. A dull mower shreds the tips and leaves the field brown by Saturday.

Aeration does more for a worn field than anything else we do. Compacted ground sheds water and starves the roots, and pulling cores opens it back up. Heavy-use fields get aerated more than once a year.

Overseeding comes right after. Late August through mid-September is the window for cool-season grass, and that’s when the seed goes in. Slit seeding in the fall adds density to the worn zones without closing the field between games.

Fertilizer follows how fast the grass is growing and how hard the field is used. Our commercial maintenance crews run the mowing and the turf program together, so one team answers for the whole field.

Spring rainouts

Frost leaves the ground, the soil turns soft, and one wet week wipes out a home schedule. Playing on saturated turf tears it up, and the damage can last all season.

The cause is usually a low spot or a field with no crown. We flag those on the first walk and fix them in the off-season, with regrading, added drains, or a sand topdressing program.

Irrigation

The best test for a field’s sprinklers is standing on the sideline at 6 a.m. after they’ve run. A dry corner and a soggy patch beside the bench usually come from the same crooked spray pattern, and one nozzle adjustment fixes both. A head sitting a half inch proud of the turf is an ankle injury.

Our irrigation crews turn the system on in spring and drain it in fall. Most of what happens between those two dates is small adjustments that keep the water where the grass needs it.

Baseball and softball infields

The infield skin is its own job. Dry mix blows away, and wet mix turns to paste. The lip at the grass edge builds up a little every season and traps water, so we cut it back.

Pitcher’s mounds and batter’s boxes get repacked before they become holes. Game-day dragging stays with the league’s own routine, and we leave that to the coach.

The area around the field

Bleacher areas, fence lines, entrance walks, and the space behind the scoreboard follow the same schedule as the field. Trees beside a field get a closer look than trees in an open lawn, since a dropped limb lands on a bench or a dugout.

Our certified arborists prune in winter dormancy and mark anything that needs attention.

New fields and renovations

Some fields are past saving with maintenance. A full renovation covers regrading, new drainage, an irrigation upgrade, and new sod or seed. Our design-build team handles a project from concept through installation, and our bid-build crews build to an architect’s plans.

Schools and municipalities usually buy through a formal bid. Both options fit that process.

Who we work with

Most of our field work comes from school districts, colleges, parks departments, and private clubs. Each field is priced on its own, so a business manager or a parks board can see what every site costs.

Many of them already run a grounds crew with a few mowers. We take on the August aeration and overseeding push, since that’s the part that outruns a small staff, and leave the daily routine with the people who know the field best.

Getting started

The first conversation is about the season. Athletic directors and parks supervisors send over the sports, the game schedule, and the dates that matter, like the home opener or a tournament weekend.

The program gets built backward from those dates.
