A Shady Spot by The Lake
Wonderful views would invite hours of relaxation by the water, but the harsh Southern exposure would require a new shade structure.
Landscape Architect: Jeff Hershberger
Location: Pewaukee
Client Need
The owner desired a larger deck and a pergola that would provide filtered shade from Southern exposure, plus access to an existing terrace and lower level. Finally, they wanted a natural stone veneer on the foundation of the house.
Inspiration
They were excited about having a new, usable space that would be an integral part of their home while focusing on the view. Our goal was to develop a design that seamlessly transitioned from inside the house to the water and created a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere for all members of the family including Charlie, the client’s white German Shepherd (my buddy).
Favorite Element
The vertical cable railings. Almost invisible for unobstructed lake view from the deck as well as from inside the house.
Biggest Challenge
Permitting … both zoning and building permits had very narrow tolerances. Also a number of underground obstructions and existing amenities to design around.
Tough Moment
When we were finally beginning to make some major progress, we uncovered an existing LVL ledger board that needed additional engineering.
Fond Memory
I stopped by one afternoon to inspect the finished project and discovered my client had invited his work team for a business meeting on the new deck. He said it was too nice a day to be meeting inside the office. The relaxation meter was pegged.
