Headquarters Happiness

The enthusiasm Badger Meter has shown for improving and managing their landscaping has been inspiring and we have enjoyed helping them reach their goals. When we asked if we could submit the property for consideration of a WLCA Excellence in Landscaping Award, they emphatically said yes.

Talking the Talk

Badger Meter is a worldwide leader of innovative products using waterflow measurement and control technologies, a corporate leader in promoting and enabling sustainability, and a community icon in Milwaukee’s North Shore. The company acknowledged that their 25-acre grounds were not indicative of a global leader and partnered with us five years ago to resurrect their landscaping and bring it line with their modern facilities.

Walking the Walk

Landing the landscape management account at a large company’s global headquarters was a major achievement but one that comes with extra scrutiny and pressure to excel. Coming out of the Great Recession the landscaping at Badger Meter had deteriorated into an unkept mess filled with sick trees and unwanted invasives. One of the first things we did when we took on the account was to spend about 400 hours removing buckthorn.

Badger Meter wants a natural-looking, environmentally friendly landscaping. Because the company specializes in water management and is committed to sustainability, they do not have an irrigation system. Keeping large spans of lawn meticulously mowed and green required flexibility for schedule fluctuations caused by the weather. To keep plants and flowers looking their best without irrigation required that we water by hand 62 times this year.

Large companies come with a large built-in challenge: lots of employees, visitors, and vehicles to contend with. Badger Meter operates with three shifts, so we have two shifts of employees, visitors, and vehicles to work around.
