French Delight

Multi-seasonal care is essential to maintain pieces of the landscape such as deer-friendly vegetation, rose gardens, and meticulously shaped hedges that can be easily damaged during harsh winter storms.

Inspiration

The client gathered her landscape ideas and expectations from working and traveling around the world. She settled on the landscape styles of historical French country gardens. We have maintained the magnificent grounds that surround a French chateau-style home since 2015.

Unique Challenge

The husband would like everything manicured but the wife favors a laissez-faire approach to management and does not mind a more natural look in certain places.

Project Management

Speaking of hedges, regular trimming is required to keep them crisp. Extra time is taken to hand prune necessary plants. It takes several skilled technicians to manage the numerous types of plants throughout the grounds.

Tree care is essential but challenging because of the care required for the ash trees and the need to thin out maturing birch trees. Most of the ash trees are on a yearly treatment for the emerald ash borer to keep the fall color display. Arborists constantly manage the entire ground’s canopy to ensure health, shape, and that enough sunlight reaches the plants below.

The lawn is kept lush and green through overseeding and a custom lawn care program due to heavy clay soil, above-average surface flow during and after storms, and the grand scale of the lawn. The weekly mowing crew keeps the yard looking manicured.

Although this is a perfect property for pets, the landscape needs to be able to withstand the constant foot traffic from the two miniature American shepherds with a ton of energy who “patrol” and “guard” the estate. Seasonal changeouts and new perennial installations must be able to absorb some physical contact without breaking.

Crew members have learned how to work with the two conflicting styles to keep both clients satisfied and the property looking glorious.
